University of Bucharest
The University of Bucharest was established on 4 July 1864 through a decree by Prince Alexandru Ioan Cuza. It is a renowned public university that evolved from the former Princely Academy, making it one of Romania’s oldest modern universities. As a distinguished member of the Universitaria Consortium, an assembly of elite Romanian universities, the University of Bucharest continues to uphold its esteemed legacy. Offering a diverse range of educational programs in both Romanian and English, the University of Bucharest has earned recognition from the Ministry of Education as an esteemed center for advanced research and education. In 2012 University of Bucharest secured a position among the TOP–700 universities globally in QS World University Rankings, sharing it with three other notable Romanian institutions.
The University of Bucharest now comprises 19 faculties, with over 30,000 full-time students of whom 2,000 are foreign students, and with 3,000 members of academic staff. The University of Bucharest operates its own Publishing House and is home to various research institutes and groups, including the Institute for Political Research, the Institute for Mathematics, the Center for Byzantine Studies, the Vasile Pârvan Archeology Seminary, and the Center for Nuclear Research. It offers a diverse array of Master’s and Doctoral programs alongside numerous lifelong learning opportunities and initiatives. The university boasts partnerships with more than 50 institutions across 40 countries and actively participates in prominent European programs such as ERASMUS, Lingua, Naric, Leonardo da Vinci, UNICA, AMOS, TEMPUS, and TEMPRA. It holds accreditation as a Cisco Academy, features a comprehensive Microsoft curriculum, and has received recognition from Red Hat for its academic program.
The University of Bucharest received the National Academic Excellence Diploma in 2000 and the National Academic Excellence Medal in 2004. In 2001 the University of Bucharest was ranked by the Ministry of Education, Research, Youth and Sport as the first university for advanced research and education by the Order of the Ministry of Education, Research, Youth and Sport regarding the results of the classification of universities. In 2015 on the occasion of its 151th anniversary, the University of Bucharest reopened the doors of the University of Bucharest Museum for visitors, after a year of renovations, modernization, and reorganization works.
