The Socrates program, known as the European Union’s education support program, has continued since 2007 under the Lifelong Learning Program. It had four sub-programs: Comenius (public education), Erasmus (higher education), Leonardo (vocational training, except at tertiary level), and Grundtvig (adult education). These support programs and the youth and sports programs have been merged by the European Union under the Erasmus + program, which will start in 2014. The higher education component of Erasmus + promotes activities such as student mobility, teacher mobility, mobility of other staff in higher education institutions, multilateral international projects, etc.

Erasmus is considered one of the most successful projects in the EU.
