Baku State University
Baku State University (BSU) is a public educational institution situated in Baku, Azerbaijan. Its establishment dates back to 1 September 1919, initiated by the Parliament of Azerbaijan Democratic Republic. The university started its educational activity with faculties of History and Philology, Physics and Mathematics, and Law and Medicine, with an initial enrollment of 1094 local and international students. The first rector of BSU was V.I. Razumovsky, a former professor of surgery at Kazan University. Among the graduates of BSU were two former presidents of Azerbaijan, Abulfaz Elchibey and Heydar Aliyev. Nobel Prize-winning physicist Lev Landau studied at BSU between 1922 and 1924.
Baku State University maintains its membership in a variety of associations and institutions, including the Association of Universities of Eurasia, which serves as a unifying platform for a majority of universities from the former USSR. During the period spanning from 2002 to 2004, BSU spearheaded the Association of Universities of Black Sea States. Moreover, the university has entered into agreements concerning scientific and technical collaboration and student-teacher exchange programs with Moscow State University, Middle East Technical University, Nice-Sofia Antipole University, Indiana University, Kyiv National University, Vienna University, and several other esteemed institutions. BSU is the only university from Azerbaijan ranked by international ranking organizations, such as University Ranking by Academic Performance, and currently ranks at 1872 in the University Ranking by Academic Performance.
Baku State University provides its international and local students with the opportunity to study 16 majors with 55 Bachelor’s and 153 Master’s degree programs. The University Library has more than 2.5 million books, 12 modernized reading rooms, and 5 subscription departments that systematically serve more than 15,000 students and teachers. The University takes part in bringing up healthy and strong youth, by building a grand Sports and Health complex. It is the center of 37 scientific Research and Teaching labs that cover Natural and Humanitarian fields of study. The Scientific Research Institute of Applied Mathematics and Scientific Research Institute of Physics Problems have more than 200 employees and teach such disciplines as Refinements of the Azerbaijani language, its History and Literature, Genetics, Nanotechnology, Invention of Nanomaterials, and other wide spectrum fields.
