ABOUT CANADA

ABOUT CANADA

Canada, the largest country of North America and the second-largest country in the world, which counts only 35 million inhabitants. This makes it a thinly populated, but prosperous country. It is also a very popular travel destination; both for tourists and business travellers.

Canada’s first inhabitants are collectively known as the First Nations.

These peoples spanned the entire territory of modern-day Canada and had unique, vibrant cultures and economies.

For many years, Canada was settled by the British and the French and was governed as a British colony.

MAP

Canada is divided into 10 provinces and 3 territories, and is so large that it has six time zones. Canada is slightly larger than the United States by around 1.5% in size. Canada has more lakes than all the other countries in the world combined. About 30% of Canadian soil consists of woodlands, and two thirds of the country is entirely uninhabited. This is mainly because over three quarters of Canadians live less than 200 miles from the border with the US.

LANGUAGE

Both English and French are commonly spoken in Canada. By far, the majority of Canadians primarily speak English. Certain places, like Quebec, have more French-speaking people. The Inuit also speak different languages, with Inuktitut being the most widely spoken

CULTURE

Canadian culture mainly originates from British, French, American and Inuit cultures. Lacrosse is the national summer sport and ice hockey the preferred winter sport. Curling and Canadian Football are also popular sports among the Canadian population. Canada has hosted the Olympic Games three times; the winter games of 1988 and 2010, and the summer games in 1976. Canadaʼs national symbols are the maple leaf (which can be found in the flag), the beaver, the Canadian goose and the ice diver. The totem pole is also frequently seen in imagery. And last but not least: the Hawaiian pizza is a Canadian invention (whether a good or a bad one is a discussion for another time).

CLIMATE

About four-fifths of Canadians live within 160 km of the country’s southern border, where there are warm springs, hot summers, and pleasantly crisp autumns. Winter usually runs from November to March, but the exact dates and lowest temperatures will vary across the country. Canada’s climate is characterized by its diversity, both from region to region and from season to season. Canadians’ seasonal temperature variations are embraced by Canadians; as a result, there are so many leisure activities to choose from as a result, from swimming outdoors in the summer to skiing in the winter!

ECONOMY

One of the world’s wealthiest major industrialized countries, Canada has always been a trading nation, and commerce remains the engine of economic growth. It is a member of the G7, the G20, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), the United Nations (UN), the World Trade Organization (WTO), and many other international bodies..

POPULATION

Canada is home to a mixture of diverse national and cultural groups. At the time of Canada’s first census, in 1871, about half the population was British and nearly one-third was French. Since that time, the proportion of Canadians of British and French ancestry has dropped to about one-fourth each, as fewer people have immigrated from the United Kingdom and France and considerably more have arrived from other countries in Europe, Southeast Asia, and Latin America.

TRANSPORTATION

Bus travel in Canada includes either local transit or long-distance vehicles. Besides city-run local transit, Canadian bus line companies offer an extensive network of reliable bus service throughout the country, which includes frequent downtown-to-downtown services between major cities. Greyhound is the major bus company in eastern Ontario and western Quebec, offering several types of passes. Canada honors all valid foreign driving licenses. Therefore, an international driver’s permit is not necessary

EDUCATION IN CANADA

This can be explained by a huge number of subjects that ensures a well-rounded education, and thoroughly planned programs of the courses, taught by real experts in their jobs.
